What is Scooby-Doo?
Scooby-Doo is a franchise originating in 1969 beginning with ‘Scooby-Doo! Where Are You!’, created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears for Hanna-Barbera studios starring Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, Shaggy Rogers, and the titular Scooby-Doo! These five mystery solvers travel around in their Mystery Machine, unmasking greedy real estate developers, oil tycoons, and various others in their weekly escapades.
At the time of writing this, the original series has spawned 13, soon to be 14, spinoff shows, 48 movies, numerous specials, comics, novels, even a musical! I have a selection of my favorites listed below, which will be edited as I watch more or my opinions change. Click below for more information on each of our beloved meddling kids!
Scooby-Doo

Scooby-Doo, the titular character of his show, is a brown Great Dane with block spotting, a hump back, bowed legs, and a prehensile tail. He is able to speak, though he has a speech impediment that makes him start most of his words with the letter ‘R’. Like another cartoon canine, Courage the Cowardly Dog, he often relies on charades to try and communicate his thoughts. Unlike most dogs, Scooby has opposable thumbs, allowing him to use phones, remotes, drive, and much more!
Scooby’s personality does have some minor variations from iteration to iteration, but by far he is the most immutable character in the franchise. The main diversity in his personality stems from his speech, or rather, how much he gets. In some series, most notably ‘Mystery Incorporated’, he has more of a speaking role, and his intelligence matches better with that of his friends. For the most part though, his characterization is that of the clumsy, lovable sidekick. That said, even in shows that flesh out his character beyond his silly side still have him acting as the bait with his best friend Shaggy. Some things just never change!
